About this service
A healthy cochlea does not just receive sound, it produces a faint echo of its own. OAE testing plays a soft click into the ear and measures that echo with a sensitive probe microphone. Its speed and reliability make it the standard newborn hearing screen, and it is also used to monitor ears exposed to noise or to medicines known to affect hearing. The test takes only a few minutes and requires nothing from the patient.
